Brace Yourselves For The Rock At E3 2020

With Keanu Reeves’ triumphant and universally lauded appearance at E3 2019 for Cyberpunk 2077, brace yourselves for a massive Hollywood presence at E3 2020.

I expect to see the likes of Ubisoft and Google Stadia etc., going all Hollywood at their press conferences next year, with max cringey appearances by actors who have no clue about video games, and more importantly, do not want to be there.

The videogame industry is a copy cat industry. Now and again someone innovates or tries something new, and the rest just copies.

Since there is only one Keanu Reeves, his “cool factor”, presence or likeability cannot be replicated. But this will not stop videogame developers and publishers from trying to replicate the Cyberunk 2077 Keanu reveal.

Even though the excitable, doing too much attendees at E3, who are trying to go viral, will instantaneously orgasm at the sight of any actor on stage. The real reaction from the gaming world will be one of second hand embarrassment.

The Cyberpunk 2077 Keanu reveal proved that buzz can be manufactured, so it’s full steam ahead for next E3. I am sure they are already having meetings at several developers and publishers.

But these prospective buzz manufacturers always look at the end product and try to emulate it without analyzing the key ingredients of said buzz.

There at least two ingredients in the Cyberpunk 2077 Keanu buzz:

First, Cyberpunk 2077 looks like an interesting game on it’s own. Gamers want to know more about the story, the visuals look great and we want to play it.

Second, it’s being made by a developer, CD PROJEKT RED, whose last effort, The Witcher 3, was well received by everyone. So, naturally, gamers are going to be excited for their next project.

Then, add an actor who is likeable, cool and has buzz himself, then it’s a perfect combination.

But, what happens most times, the developer just contracts a famous person to act as a personal billboard for their lukewarm or unappealing product.

So, welcome to the stage: Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson!
